Teeth whitening
Teeth whitening can eliminate discoloration in just a few hours. At Aqua Dental, we offer professional teeth whitening treatments at all of our clinics.
Teeth whitening is a treatment that is gaining popularity, with a wide array of preparations and methods available on the market. However, it is crucial to seek the services of a reputable dental care provider to ensure the safest and most effective whitening experience.
Teeth whitening offers a simple and effective way to refresh your smile. Opting for in-clinic treatment is the quickest and safest option, provided that the clinic uses proven methods. If you choose at-home whitening, it is essential to choose approved products and seek guidance from a dental professional about the treatment process.
The outcome of teeth whitening depends on factors such as how long you’ve had the discoloration, your initial tooth color and type of discoloration. The longevity of whitening results depends on various factors, including post-whitening dental care, enamel thickness, and individual habits related to diet, nicotine use, and medication.

Dental examination before teeth whitening
Before undergoing a teeth whitening treatment, it is imperative that you’ve had a dental examination within the last six months. This examination ensures that your oral health is satisfactory before commencing whitening of your teeth. Any dental issues such as cavities must be addressed beforehand. How does teeth whitening work?
The process of teeth whitening varies depending on the chosen method and so does the treatment duration. Teeth whitening is a chemical process where the bleaching agent penetrates the enamel and breaks down discolored components, resulting in a brighter tooth.
Preparations for teeth whitening
Before a whitening treatment, the dentist or dental hygienist will assess your teeth to determine the most suitable method. It's essential to note that fillings, implants, and crowns cannot be whitened and may need to be replaced to match the new tooth shade achieved through whitening.
Teeth whitening in clinic
If you opt for in-clinic whitening, your mouth and teeth will be prepared, and your gums protected before the procedure. The treatment typically lasts about 60 minutes and can be repeated until the desired results are achieved. For at-home whitening, an initial visit to the dental clinic is required to receive customized trays and instructions from a dentist.
Who is suitable for teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is suitable for most individuals dealing with discoloration, typically caused by lifestyle factors. However, certain factors such as long-term illness, trauma, or genetics can also cause discoloration. It's important to have healthy gums and no exposed tooth roots or untreated cavities before proceeding with a teeth whitening treatment.
How do you feel after the treatment?
Immediately after a teeth whitening treatment, you may experience swollen gums due to the gel used during the treatment, which can cause discomfort. If you've used a plastic splint, you might develop ulcers which can require a brief pause in treatment to allow for healing.
Tooth sensitivity after tooth whitening
Tooth sensitivity is a common side effect of teeth whitening, due to the whitening agent penetrating the teeth, causing an inflammation in the dental pulp. Typically, these issues subside within a few days.
What kind of results can be expected?
Results vary depending on individual conditions. The effectiveness of teeth whitening depends on several factors:
- Type of discoloration (genetics or lifestyle related)
- The original color of your teeth
- How long you’ve had the discolorations
Generally, teeth with more discoloration are easier to whiten, than teeth that have a whiter colour, while teeth with amalgam fillings or damaged dental pulp cannot be whitened. For longer-lasting results, we recommend using a whitening toothpaste.
Substances that discolor teeth
Avoid consuming foods or beverages containing strong colour pigments for 72 hours following teeth whitening, as some substances are more likely to stain teeth than others. For example:
- Coffee
- Tea
- Tobacco
- Red wine
- Tomato sauce
- Curry
- Balsamic vinegar
- Berries
- Soy
- Acidic foods/drinks
- Pineapple
- Citrus fruits
- Pomegranates
- Dark green vegetables
- Red vegetables
For how long does teeth whitening last?
The durability of teeth whitening depends on various factors, including post-treatment habits such as smoking or consuming staining substances. Generally, proper oral hygiene can help maintain results for up to two years.
The best teeth whitening method depends on individual circumstances and desired outcomes. Different whitening agents yield different results, and your dentist or dental hygienist can help determine the most suitable option for you.
