The dentist will also assess your overall oral health and provide recommendation on how to maintain a good dental hygiene. If treatment is needed, such as for cavities or other problems, it will usually be performed by the same dentist, although some procedures might be done by a dental nurse or dental hygienist.

Different types of dental care
Dentistry encompasses various specialties, and many dentists decide to specialize in different fields by pursuing additional training. To practice as a dentist in Sweden, one must be licensed by Socialstyrelsen after completing their education. It is only after two years of clinical practice that a dentist has the opportunity to further their education as a specialist. Currently, there are nine recognized dental specialties:

- Oral Prosthetics (dentures, implants, and bridges)
- Oral Surgery Endodontics (root canal treatments)
- Periodontology (treatment of gum diseases)

- Orofacial Medicine (comprehensive care that includes the whole body)

Regular dental visits can prevent severe diseases in the mouth. Many oral infections or injuries are not noticeable until they have progressed significantly, potentially requiring extensive treatment. However, with regular check-ups at the dentist, early signs of disease can be detected and treated promptly, preventing more serious complications.
